The Grand Canyon of the Colorado River in Arizona has long been one of America's premier tourist attractions and in recent years the volume of motor vehicle traffic has threatened irreparable damage to the South Rim. For many years the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe line to the Canyon lay abandoned but intact, until a syndicate of businessmen took control and installed a steam-powered passenger service. The opening of rail service has alleviated the need for additional highway and massive parking lot construction-- just what railroads are supposed to do! G.C. Rwy. 2-8-0 No. 18, built by Alco in 1910, was at Red Lake on May 4, 1991.
